Below is a summary of the tale found in the book.

One day Chang Tao-link was walking with his disciple when they spied a shaft of white light. They followed it to a mountain and there they met 12 evil women who said the light was caused by the yin and that in the pond nearby lived an evil dragon.

They tried unsuccessfully to lure the dragon out. Finally, Tao-ling drew a phoenix and threw it into the air. This did indeed scare the dragon away, but it took the pond with him!

So Tao-ling put his sword in the ground and brought forth another lake.
