A Dragon King

A tablet in a temple dedicated on Mount Yang Suchow in Kiangsu tells of how an old man requested shelter from a storm. A young girl answered the door and let him in, but when he left the next morning, she was with child. When it came time for the baby to be born, all that came into the world was a white ball of flesh and the family was so revolted it threw it into the water to drown. To their shock, it turned into a magnificent white dragon. The girl fainted and never recovered.

The villagers revered her as the Mother of the White Dragon and built a shrine on her burial place at the foot of a hill.

Variations:
  • The girl is thrown out of the house when her family discovers she is pregnant
  • The "baby" is thrown into the ocean, not a well.
  • The girl dies in a storm.
Other Notes:
  • 5 toes
  • White
