Pan To and the Dragon Prince
Time Period: Unknown References in Literature: None Sources: Legends and Lore In the Fujian Provice around the town of Longyan, an evil dragon lived in a pool in the mountains. The local people soon learned to avoid the place, but a party of traveling merchants happened to rest there without being warned. They were killed and eaten by the dragon and when a priest, Pan To, heard this he decided it was time that something was done. So he went to the kingdom of Wuchang where for four long years he studied the secrets of dragons. Then he returned to the pool, summoned the dragon by force and led him off to another lake in the west where the Dragon Prince of Wuchang dwelt and delivered him to justice, after which there was no more trouble. This Dragon Prince is still honored by the king of Wuchang who often visits the lake to thank the Prince for his blessings, throwing into it offerings of jade, gold, precious stones, pearls, and other valuables. There is a monastery nearby with fifty monks who depend upon the dragon's bounty for their survival, for it is said he thows some of the treasures back to them on the shore, and that is how they support themselves. For this reason it is called the Dragon Prince Monastary. |
