Below is a summary of the tale found in the book.

Shen Lang, a dragon, transformed himself into a man and married. But in the warmer months he would spend great deals of time wandering the lakes and streams.

At one of these he met Hsu Chen-chiin (Of Hsii, the Dragon-Slayer, and nicknamed Sun) and both turned into oxen. Shen Lung then ran to hide. But Hsu Sun caught up with him at his home, commanded that he come out and had the guards kill him. Then he called out Shen's two sons and exposed them as dragons, as well. Finally, the wife was forced from the home and it sank back into the earth.
