"The Shinto Nihongi ... a watersnake held the forks of a river and preyed upon the travellers who passed that way; the hero Agatamori gave the dragon a test to determine whether or not he should spare the dragons's life; the dragon failed and Agatamori killed him and his companions, whom he sought out in a cave at the river bottom."
