How the Jellyfish Lost Its Bones

Versions of this story disagree as to whether it was Rinjin's bride or his daughter that had a craving for monkey's liver.

Either way, Rinjin sent either Jellyfish or Turtle (versions vary on this point, as well) on a quest to bring back Monkey. But Jellyfish tells Monkey the reason why he has been invited to the palace. Monkey tells him that he had taken his liver out, but if he is led back home, he will retrieve his liver and come right back.

But this was, of course, a trick, and Monkey escaped, leaving Jellyfish to explain his tardiness/absence. As his punishment, Jellyfish is made boneless, scaleless, and he can no longer guard the gates of the Palace.

Sometimes, it is Octopus and not Jellyfish in this story.
