No Rain
Time Period: References in Literature: None Sources: Japanese Tales What follows is a summary of tale #36 found in the book. A monk in the Temple of the Dragon Garden chanted every day and one of the supplicants who listened was a dragon. The two became great friends over time. But a great drought fell over the land, and the emperor (who'd heard of their friendship) went to the monk and commanded him to tell the dragon to produce rain or else the monk would be banished. So the monk went to his friend and told of his plight. The dragon said that if he was to make rain, he'd be killed. So he asked that the monk go to a lake and find his body, bury it, and build a temple on top. Also, build 3 other temples. In return, the dragon would provide the rain in 3 days time. 3 Days later there was rain and the monk kept his promise - honoring his friend until the end of his days. |
