Persia can claim mythical and creation dragons, many of which are the roots for later dragons - including treasure-guarding, gruesome appearance, and the penchant towards women and virgins. They are also associated with the weather and rain.

Notes:

A seal found at Susa in Persia shows the outline of a primitive dragon-like creature and can be dated as the earliest-known representation. It put the head, wings, and feet of the falcon of Horus with the Hathor-Sekhet lioness. (Source: Dragons and Dragon Lore pg 25.)

Sir William Ouseley wrote in 18321 that he found the remains of a much reconstructed castle near Shiraz called Fahender. Legend has it that its rather extensive treasure was/is guarded by either a winged serpent or a dragon. (Source: Dragons and Dragon Lore pg 37)

"On an archaic cylinder seal from the ancient Elamite capital of Susa, the dragon is a lion with an eagle's head and wings....". (Source: China and Japan, p74 )

Persian soldiers would often drive into battle behind immense dragon figures to frighten their opposition. (Source: The Enchanted World: Dragons, pg 11 )
