Beginning around the 8th Century AD, the Vikings appeared on European shores and wrecked havoc on the countryside and towns. They would appear in the early morning or night-time mists, take maidens and young boys, then disappear again just as silently. On the prows of these feared ships were carvings of maidens and beasts - fearsome, huge, and menacing. Dragons were a favourite, and when the dragons came from the mists on the water, all on the land cowered in fear.
