As the Archives only have a single tale about dragons in Vietnam, here it is. Region: Vietnam Time Period: Around the World in Fairy Tales References in Literature: Sources: Polenth Tale: A kind man named Slowcoach befriends a little animal named Cibet. Later, Slowcoach’s mean brother killed Cibet, and Slowcoach buried him under a great tree. Whenever Slowcoach went to visit the tree to pray, silver pieces rained down on him. His brother saw this and went to the tree for silver himself, but only got mud, and in great anger cut down the tree. Slowcoach picked up the pieces of wood, and made a pig’s trough, which his brother also destroyed. Finally, Slowcoach made a fish hook, but when he first touched the hook to the water, the lake flooded, nearly killing him, and he lost both the rod and his hook. While he was on the banks of the now-receding lake, a beautiful maiden appeared, claiming to be the daughter of the Dragon King. She told him that the Dragon King had the hook caught in his mouth and that he very much wanted it removed. Slowcoach agreed to help the Dragon King, and the maiden created a bubble which carried Slowcoach to the bottom of the sea. Gently, he removed the hook from the mouth of the Dragon King, and in return, was given a jug with a blue fish. He took his gift back to land and said good-bye to the maiden. But he noticed something strange in the days that followed. Whenever he left his cottage, it was cleaned. So one day he pretended to leave, and sneaked around to a window to see what happens. He saw the blue fish turn into the maiden of the sea. He was very pleased, and rushed in to smash the jug - keeping her there. She agreed, but told him that he must make her some bones first, as she was only a fish. He said yes, and the dragon king’s daughter became his wife. Slowcoach’s brother saw all this, and he, too, wanted a Dragon King’s daughter for a wife. He dove into the lake, but the Dragon King knew his heart, and turned him into a fish. |
